It was impossible to look at him now, fully dressed as he was, without remembering last night, without inwardly aching for the intimacy of his warm bare flesh against hers, for his hands, his mouth on her skin and hers on his. Only this time...
Helplessly she squeezed her hand into a small fist .. as she fought to suppress the hot acid tears she could feel burning the back of her throat. This time it wasn't just physical intimacy with him that she craved. This time she wanted emotional intimacy as well. This time she wanted the freedom to whisper to him all the sweet, self-betraying words she had forced herself not to say last night; this time she wanted to hear him saying them to her, showing her, telling her with something much more vocal than the low, passionate sounds of pleasure he'd made against her skin last night that what they were sharing meant something special to him, that she meant something special to him.
As she recognised just where her thoughts were leading her, Mollie bit down hard on her bottom lip.
Behind her, Alex took a deep breath and then another. God, but she knew how to hurt.
Had she any idea just how much she was hurting him?
He wasn't the kind of man who went to bed with a woman just for sex, and, anyway, to describe what they had shared last night as just 'sex' was a desecration, a denial of all that he knew it had been—for him at least. And for her? That he had aroused her, pleasured her, there was no doubt, but to leave him this morning as she had done, creeping out like a thief whilst he was still asleep, leaving him to wake up, expecting to find her there beside him, and to find instead that all there was was that curt, cold note informing him that what had happened was something that was best forgotten...
Still, maybe she had done him a favour. If he had woken up to find her in his bed this morning he doubted that he would have been able to prevent himself from telling her how he felt, from admitting that, impossible and unrealistic though it might seem, he had virtually fallen in love with her at first sight and that he had certainly loved her at first kiss...first touch...
Obviously, though, she did not share his feelings. Although why on earth he should love her he had no idea. He had never met a more stubborn, wrong-headed woman in all his life, one so wilfully determined to misrepresent and misjudge him. Nor had he ever met a woman who made him feel the way she made him feel, a woman who made him feel that right now the only thing he wanted to do was to reach out and take hold of her...
Had she any idea how the sweet, womanly scent of her in the small enclosed space of the hallway was driving him out of his mind, how every time he looked at her all he could see.
